Note how the trees are right in a row, and their roots appear to be holding them off the ground. The reason for this is that these trees sprouted from what is called a "nurse log". A tree feel and began to decay. Seeds landed on the nutrient-rich decaying tree. The fallen tree also left a gap in the thick canopy which allowed light to reach the seedlings. The combination of the nutrients and the light gave the seedlings an advantage over surrounding trees. The sight of a number of trees all lined up like this is pretty common in the Olympic National Park rain forests.
